How credits are used

Developing EPDs in bulk? Running a pre-verified EPD tool?
Independent review matters most if you build or run an EPD tool. A mistake in an individually modelled EPD affects one product. A mistake inside an EPD tool is amplified into every declaration the tool produces — and because the tool is pre-verified, nobody tends to look again. An independent review of the tool's output catches a systematic issue once, before it's published a hundred times.

Pricing questions
What counts as "one review"? One review is a single quality review run. A review costs 1 credit per EPD. If you update your documents and re-run the review, it uses credits again.
How is tax handled? Applicable VAT or sales tax is calculated at checkout based on your location. A tax-compliant invoice is provided with every purchase. If you are a B2B customer in the EU, you can enter your VAT number during checkout for the reverse charge mechanism.
Are there any recurring fees? Not for quality reviews — they run on a prepaid model: you buy credits when you need them, and credits are valid for 12 months from purchase. The upcoming Verifier Plan is the exception — it will be a monthly subscription.
What is your refund policy? All purchases are final. Refund requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis at Lodestellar's discretion. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for more details.

A brief history
Lodestellar emerged out of Digital Construction 2022, which gathered construction and software specialists in Tallinn to accelerate the adoption of game-changing digital tools across the global construction sector. A panel of industry experts awarded Lodestellar (then Lodestar) first place to support its further development.
After that, we continued to refine the concept and develop the technology — while still primarily working ourselves as EPD developers and verifiers for building product manufacturers across Europe and the US.
After extensive industry validation, use as an internal tool at LCA Support, and then wider pilots, we discovered that a quality review at an early stage of development can significantly reduce a lot of costly hassle later between manufacturers, developers, verifiers, and programme operators.

Anni is also the co-author of Estonia's national carbon footprinting method for buildings, the co-author of the country's green construction roadmap for 2040, and the Estonian partner of the Nordic LCA harmonization project.

Common questions
What gets checked in uploaded EPDs?
Lodestellar reviews EPDs against the requirements and quality expectations relevant to the applicable framework, including ISO 14025, EN 15804+A2, and ISO 21930.
For EN 15804+A2 EPDs, we also include checks aligned with requirements commonly used by programme operators operating under ECO Platform, together with our own additional quality checks.
This means the review logic is adapted to the format your EPD is intended to follow, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. The tool automatically recognises the relevant review path and focuses on what is visible in the EPD itself, including transparency requirements, numerical consistency, and basic sanity checks of reported values. If you include the background LCA report, its data is reviewed too; standalone supporting documents beyond the EPD and background report are out of scope. cPCR / Part B checks are not yet included, but are planned.
Lodestellar is independent of any programme operator, ECO Platform, and any LCA or EPD software provider. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Our goal is to help teams produce clearer, more consistent, and higher-quality EPDs across both European and North American workflows.
What file formats can I upload?
You can upload EPDs in the formats commonly used during drafting and publication:

- PowerPoint
- Excel
Lodestellar reviews EPD documents themselves, whether draft or already published, not LCA models. You can also include the accompanying background LCA report so it's reviewed alongside the EPD.
Other supporting documents are not currently supported. Digital EPD files such as ILCD+EPD aren't supported yet either — we'll enable them soon.
At what stage of the EPD process can Lodestellar be used?
Lodestellar is primarily designed to be used as a first-pass review during EPD creation, before formal verification or publication, although it can be used at any stage of the process, including on published EPDs.
Identifying potential quality issues as early as possible helps teams produce higher-quality EPDs more efficiently and reduce the cost, time, and risk of resolving issues later.
The aim is to help users better understand what high-quality EPDs look like and highlight aspects of the document that may benefit from improvement. Lodestellar supports greater transparency and accountability for quality across the sector by strengthening the work of EPD professionals, not replacing independent verification or programme operator decisions.
How accurate is the quality review?
The tool is smart, but not infallible. It runs on a large language model with well designed guardrails and carefully crafted checks. Use it as an additional quality layer, but still use your own judgement.
We are developing internal benchmarking methods to track how the tool performs and improves over time. Our goal is to publish information about its accuracy and progress as the system evolves.
Independent verification remains essential, and Lodestellar is designed to support better EPD quality and understanding, not to replace the judgement of experienced verifiers.
Can't I just use my own AI?
We've tried that a lot ourselves. Even with hundreds of individual prompts, it just doesn't match the quality of a dedicated EPD quality review. We've carefully designed Lodestellar to handle EPD quality reviews as efficiently, thoroughly, helpfully (and still as affordably) as possible, which is not as simple as training a large language model on the requirements, but ensuring every possible quality issue is codified in the right way. We are constantly developing that so we can keep raising quality beyond compliance.
How does it compare with tools from LCA software providers?
Lodestellar is independent of all EPD programme operators and also all LCA software. Their own tools work slightly differently. They are mostly focused on checking the integrity of LCA calculations, avoiding major issues, and validating the process. Lodestellar thoroughly checks and advises on EPD quality issues in ways that even go beyond compliance.
How is my company data used?
Your data is kept safe and secure and you can delete it at any time. All data is automatically deleted after a year. Your specific company data is not used to train AI models. We may use anonymised, aggregated usage data only to improve our services, as outlined in our Terms and Conditions.
Why's it called Lodestellar?
We started out as Lodestar, back at Digital Construction 2022. That's a star used for navigation, typically the North Star. In modern usage, a lodestar can be anything that serves as an inspiration or guide. For example, verified environmental impacts now serve as the lodestar for growing a competitive, sustainable business.
To launch our tool, we needed a truly unique name, however. So we kept lode, the old English word for path, way or course, and we added 'stellar', which still refers to a star but also emphasises quality. Lodestellar is now a trademark of Lodestellar OÜ.
